Huaraz

A sleepy, scenic mountain town, Huaraz is known to attract trekkers, bikers and extreme-sport / backpacker tourists of all kinds. The city was shaken in 1970 by a massive earthquake and is still recovering from the tragedy, but much of the infrastructure has slowly recuperated. Huaraz is about an 8-hour bus ride from Lima, and its lively marketplaces feature many cheap handmade goods.
