Philadelphia

Where I've Been Spotlight: Best Fourth of July Destinations 2009

Philly flashes a day of themed pageantry, partying and a Sheryl Crow show among their already-historic scenery.

The most historic American cities seem to spare no expense celebrate their past patriotism. As the nation’s first capital, Philadelphia commemorates their place in U.S. lore starting with traditional ceremonies on the Independence Mall, the national park that hosts the famous Liberty Bell. The cracked Bell will be stricken in its annual “tapping ceremony” at 1:30 p.m. (Note to the organizers: Don’t tap too hard.) A parade will take place in the theme of “Main Street USA,” which should be worthwhile if only to witness the poor souls who are forced to wear the proper dress. And the patriotism wouldn’t be complete without excited gluttony: All along the mall will feature an array of restaurants for the family during the afternoon celebration, including an Ice Cream Festival.

And the madness doesn’t end when the sun sets. Sheryl Crow, whose down-home hits often seem like they were typecast for an American summer festival like this, will take the stage at around 8 p.m. After her hit parade will come the pyrotechnics, set just above all the museums and landmarks. Whip out a $100 bill that day and you’ll certainly make out a smile on ol’ Ben Franklin’s face.
