Book a Free Budapest Walking tour! This free service (tips are appreciated) very highly regarded and offers several different tour options. We didn't actually connect with them because it rained horribly the whole time we were there and well, my husband thinks he knows everything. Don't make the same mistake! You should walk across the Chain Bridge and catch the Funicular Train up the hill to the Castle and spend half a day up there. Don't eat at the Castle though as it's ridiculously expensive and not that good. Walk back across the next bridge (to the right if you are across the river facing the castle) and work your way back towards the Chain Bridge. Definitely take a trip on the subway, just to experience the escalators. Maybe that was just me, but I thought they were trippy. Go to a Ruin Bar. Simpla is located about 2 or 3 blocks from the Old Synagogue. If you like "taking the waters" take a half day out to go to the Szecheny Baths. They are lovely and great for people watching, by which I mean eccentric characters more than skimpy swim suits, but it's Europe so you might get some of those too! Be prepared for the odd, very old style european locker rooms.

The best things to see in Hungary are ~500 km East of Budapest: it's called Transylvania :P

Hope I'm not too late to help!
I'm just back from Budapest, that was my 3rd time there. Szechenyi baths are far better that Gellert baths, just for ease of access and things on offer.
Eateries to try are Menza, Karma and Bohemia on Liszt Ferenc tér 2, not necessarily the cheapest but the foods and drinks are fantastic.
The synagogue is beautiful and the House of Terror is definitely worth a visit - educational and totally heart-breaking, all about the holocaust, propaganda used during the war and revolution, and the torture chambers.
Castle Hill and the Citadel are also worth a visit - if you jump on a tour bus it'll take you on a spin around all of these places, and you can hop on and off anywhere.
Enjoy!
