Simple answer, Peruvian buses. The bus network is very good across the country and if you pay a little extra you can travel like your in first class on an airplane. Flights in Peru are expensive and so the bus is a cheap and affordable option. Just remember that Peru is a huge country and so some of the journeys you mention may take around 10 hours. It is also better to not be too cheap and go with a reputable bus company. The best companies in Peru are Cruz del Sur and Transportes Linea. Both have websites where you can book ahead or get an idea of the dates, times and prices of different routes. But you can normally book one or two days before your journey without any problems. As for tours in each city/location - shop around once you get there to find the lowest possible prices and ask other travellers for their recommendations to find the most up to date advice.

Hi tom,
if you want to book things the tourist friendly way, you're going to pay for it. for example, if you're going to buy flights around south america, make you sure you do it on the spanish language version of the website (the airlines will add about $15 for the convenience of reading your flight details in english) if you want to travel around, do what emily's suggested, get the "on a shoestring" book or simply the lonely planet standard guide for peru, then when you get to lima book everything else of the ground, buy your train ticket to machu picchu in cusco, not online, and but it at the train station, not at a travel agency.
good domestic carriers within peru are
Star Peru
Peruvian Airlines (recently formed but reliable)
and LAN (the chilean national carrier and largest in peru)
flights from lima to cusco are about $100 return, which is about the same as the bus price for this particular route, however, flights around other parts of South America are much more expensive, which is when cheap bus travel comes into its own.
if you want anymore advice, let me know. -

All you have to do is do more research on websites... try travel yahoo for airlines price shown in USD, then try search "bed and breakfast" for your accommodation at yahoo main search icon, and check airlines offer for domestic line in Peru if you don't want to take long hours busses, and get some guide on things to do in Peru, Machu Pichu .... at some travelguide website and tripadvisor, it helps..

Try finding a lonely planet book with Peru and "on a shoestring" in the title. They always have great places and tour ideas that are affordable and off the beaten path.

apologies for all the mistakes is this, I should really read through before posting.
