There isint really a cheap way to visit Machu Picchu. However, it is amazing and worth every penny! You have to go to Lima and then take a flight to Cusco. You must stay 1 night in Cusco, to be able to get your body used to the altitude. There are 3 types of trains, luxury: hiram bingham, the moderate and the economy the backpackers... I took both the moderate and backpackers and I really disliked the backpackers because you forget that most of the people that hiked on the inca trail return via train and guess what,,, they use this one. They havent showered for days in most cases and the train back tired with the smell is not a very good combination. But honestly speaking... there isnt a cheap way to visit MAPI.

Book a flight to Cusco while in Lima, stay in Cusco overnight to avoid soroche (altitude sickness). Take the train to Machu Pichu, there are some low cost hotels at the village Aguas Caliente, where the train drops you off. You can walk up to the ruins. Staying overnight at the ruins is well worth the money. Lots to see while on the site, you can even walk part of the Inca Trail. The best thing to do is to stay 2 or 3 nights at the hotel right at the ruins. I have been to Machu Pichu twice and 3 trips to Cusco from Lima, lived in Lima for 4 years. Lots of adventures.

You can fly from Lima to Cuzco. Take a day or two there to acclimate. I got a horrendous headache. Drinking coca tea helps. Take the train from Cuzco-several stops along the way-interesting observations. At one point the train reaches around 14,000 feet or so, maybe higher, I can't remember. A little man comes around on the train with oxygen if you need it. Vans transport you from the Machu Pichu train stop up to the site itself. I recommend overnighting at the hotel there, getting up really early the next morning, climbing up behind the hotel to watch the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Stunning.

You need to get to Cusco first then get the train to Aguas Calientes. There is reasonable food and accommodation there. You can get a mini bus to the site and if you get up early you can beat the package day trippers who arrive at about 9:30am on the first train.
Cusco is worth a few days visit as well and you may need a bit of time to get used to the altitude anyway. -

I am not really sure what the cheapest way is. However whatever you end up paying it is sooooo worth it. I also highly reccomend getting there ridiculosly early in the morning to stand in line to get a (free) ticket stub to hike Mount Huayna Picchu. The view is stunning but only 500 people are allowed a day.
Good Luck :) -

Inca rail is cheap and backpacker often use it. Find out were is the closest stop. You may have to take a bus and taxi to get to the nearest station
